What Is Timing Belt Replacement?

The timing belt, also called a “cambelt,” synchronizes the rotation of the camshaft and the crankshaft and is an item that must be removed and replaced with a new timing belt on some cars in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. The camshaft opens and closes the valves that let air into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine (ICE). The crankshaft keeps the pistons moving up and down. These shafts are turned by the timing belt and coordinate with the firing of the pistons, which develops an engine’s power. Some engines use timing chains in place of timing belts. These chains are usually more durable and less likely to slip than timing belts but still require regular inspection and adjustment.

Timing belt replacement should be performed before the timing belt breaks. If the belt breaks, severe damage to the engine could result. A gas- or diesel-powered vehicle cannot start without a timing belt or chain. See our Service Advisor tool to locate shops for timing belt replacement in your area.
